Yahoo blocked in China

Has been since last night – I can’t get any emails. You can read more about the massive blackout here. I’ve been amazed as I’ve tried to get from site to site over the past 24 hours. Many that opened with no problem just a day ago are sealed tight. Sometimes there seems to be zero rhyme or reason (make that always). Part two of the WaPo’s sensational report on Cheney is inacessible, while the first and third parts open just fine. Tried different proxies, no luck. If I don’t respond to your emails, you know why.

UPDATE: Yahoo is back on as of 11:06 a.m., Beijing time. – Jeremiah

From Richard: Thanks, Jeremiah. The Nanny has seemed particularly excitable lately. And so fickle.

One thing I’ve always wondered is, why bother blocking or censoring the internet for political content at all?

Surely, the CCP has nothing to fear from a well-informed citizenry? Right, guys?

Yahoo has just been kind of weird lately – not regular Yahoo but Yahoo mobile. It’s possible this is some kind of Yahoo, not GFW issue.

The rest of it, there’s no excuse.

Jeremiah, in answer to your question…you know, I’d like to make some joke about the Party wanting to protect its citizens from Paris Hilton, but I don’t have it in me right now.

Something I noticed a few days before this happened was stories linked on Yahoo News about the Shanxi human trafficking scandal were being blocked. You could, on the other hand, read the same articles from their original sources: in this case, the NYTimes and CSMonitor websites. BBC content, to which Yahoo News frequently links, has always been blocked, but this was the first time I’ve noticed it done with otherwise available content.

Sounds like I need to take down my “artistic photographs” of Hua Guofeng…

And yes, I’m joking. Not sure what’s going on there. I’m getting plenty of hits from Europe and the US.
