China’s wikipedia ban lifted?

True? Not true?

Oh, I wish it was true. At this exact moment, I am unable to get to Wikipedia in Beijing without a proxy. Others I know can. So the ban may be in force in some place and not in others.

It’s still okay in Zhengzhou, Henan Province as of a couple minutes ago.

I need to keep reminding myself, never get excited about reports that this or that ban has been lifted. It’s like a see-saw, sometimes up, sometimes down. No one knows what makes it go down one day or up the next, and the more jubilant you get over a sudden lifting of the ban the more depresed you’ll be tomorrow when the ban is back in place. Witness blogspot, the freeing of which made us all so ecstatic a couple of months ago.

I have been able to access it in Shenzhen for 2 weeks. Before that, I needed a proxy.

It’s working up here in Northeast Beijing out by the airport.

I’ve heard it’s ISP specific.

It’s working great in the Dongcheng district of Beijing, on a China Netcom connection, and has been for the last week or so. I’ve heard it’s sporadic on other networks.

Has been working in Nanjing for some time now (public ADSL service), although I still instinctively click to use a proxy whenever Wikipedia is linked/mentioned.

The English language version has been unblocked since about the 10th of October (at least here in Suzhou, Jiangsu province), but the Chinese language version is still blocked.

I hate to burst this brief bubble of optimism, but after a few weeks of seemingly unfettered wikipedia access, it seems to be down again for me.
