Hotan Jade

Strip-mining into dusty oblivion a piece of China’s soul. A sad story.

I’ve actually gone jade picking along the river with locals. I actually find the jade story a stronger example of Eastern Chinese depleting local resources than oil. Instead of jade being a reliable income source for decades to come for the locals (overwhelmingly Uyghur) who live there, it gets sucked dry by the Chinese nouveau riche. Ironic, because you could argue that China’s most traditional stone would be better protected by an independent Xinjiang (which would have an incentive to limit exports to China and manage the resource better). Huh. Never thought of that before – Uyghur Independence as a means of protecting traditional Han culture.

Why don’t you bring it up at the next People’s Congress?
