It’s reassuring to know that no less an authority than God Almighty is telling Bush what to do in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, a major three-part series on BBC TWO (at 9.00pm on Monday 10, Monday 17 and Monday 24 October), Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003.
Nabil Shaath says: “President Bush said to all of us: ‘I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, “George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.” And I did, and then God would tell me, “George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …” And I did. And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, “Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East.” And by God I’m gonna do it.'”
Abu Mazen was at the same meeting and recounts how President Bush told him: “I have a moral and religious obligation. So I will get you a Palestinian state.”
We can all sleep a little easier tonight, secure in the knowledge that God’s on our side and calling the shots. Just remember, other great leaders have claimed to have a direct pipeline to God, only it didn’t always work out as promised:

Let’s hope Bush is really hearing God, and not some voice from his drugged-out college days. Looking at how things are going so far – you know, Abu Ghraib and the quagmire and the torture and all that – I see more than a slight cause for concern. A president getting his marching order from God is almost never a good thing.
Update: Oh dear, this one is even worse.
Abbas said that at Aqaba, Bush promised to speak with Sharon about the siege on Arafat. He said nobody can speak to or pressure Sharon except the Americans.
According to Abbas, immediately thereafter Bush said: “God told me to strike at al Qaida and I struck them, and then he instructed me to strike at Saddam, which I did, and now I am determined to solve the problem in the Middle East. If you help me I will act, and if not, the elections will come and I will have to focus on them.”

I know a guy at the Port Authority bus terminal in Manhattan, and God talks to him ALL the time, too!
Last time I heard from him, he was saying something to God like, “ICE cream! ICE cream, NO NO NO! ICE cream for him. NO NO! Pick it out!”
And then he sat down and picked at his belly button lint.
Now, I wonder if God sends the same messages to George as he sends to the winos at the bus terminal?

So you think they are lying? The reporters from Ha-Aretz idn’t think so. If they wanted to make up lies about Bush, they could do way, way better than this. It’s in line with other things Commander Codpiece has said.
You are saying they must be lying because they are Palestinians. That’s unfair. Abbas is not a Nazi and he has been working closely with Bush and Sharon, certainly far more effetively and earnestly than his predecessor. Leave it to Conrad to smear him a la Charles Johnson.

There’s an old aphorism from the days of Usenet that anyone who invokes Adolph Hitler or the Holocaust into an argument has, by default, lost the argument. I don’t actually think you’ve lost here (George Bush on a mission from God? Not the God I believe in, he isn’t!), but it is worth mentioning.
As for me, I’m fairly religious and I look forward to the day when we all get to watch George try defend his statements to God Allmighty himself. I’m fairly sure God doesn’t like having his name slung around like this.
It would be easy to dismiss “W” as crazy, but sadly, he really isn’t. He’s just an egotistical a&% hole with a pathetic need to be right.
I would actually feel better about it all if George were crazy. Then we could all admit a national mistake, get him the care he needs, and get back to being America. (Boy, weren’t those the days?)

Nominalism again. Just giving a name to something doesn’t necessarily create – or even signify – a reality.
Bush calls himself a Christian. Big deal. I could call myself an Orthodox Jew and cite some selected Old Testament scriptures to back me up, but it doesn’t make me an Orthodox Jew. And neither would wearing braids, etc
Although, if I at least attempted to follow the spirit of the Old Testament, then I might at least, oh, sign the Senate bill with provisions against torture……that would make me more of a true Jew than just calling myself one. Or more of a true Christian than Bush has ever demonstrated himself to be.

Don’t you guys get it? Every thing that Bush does comes from Chaney. Bush is too stupid to do anything on his own. He’s just a puppet and Chaney is the puppet master.
