How About, “We’ve Decided To Go In A Different Direction”?

From Other Lisa & Martyn…

From Saturday’s unlinkable SCMP, more on the upcoming Chinese version of “The Apprentice”:

The winner of the Chinese version of The Apprentice
will be hired on a lucrative 1 million yuan annual
salary in the business empire of maverick Beijing
property tycoon Pan Shiyi.

Speaking for the first time on being chosen by Donald
Trump to front the programme, Mr Pan said he would not
adopt the aggressive TV persona of the New York
property mogul with losing contestants.

“I definitely won’t say, `You’re fired!’ It’s just not
in my character,” said the 41-year-old, though he has
routinely sacked his worst-performing employees over
the past decade.

“Chinese people give others face. To tell somebody
he’s fired in such a tone, especially when this person
has literally not been hired, is not the Chinese way.
“I probably will say something like, `You will have a
better opportunity somewhere else’, in a way he will
get it and find the manner acceptable,” added the man
nicknamed Naughty Boy for his company’s innovative
designs.

Do you know what happened to the other Apprentice like program to be hosted by Vincent Lo of Shui On Holdings? Interesting because there is a law suit between Vincent Lo/his HK partners and Donald Trump.

Here’s a couple more paragraphs, PC:

The show will be in direct competition with a similar reality show Wise Man Takes All, which is backed by Vincent Lo Hong-sui, chairman of Hong Kong developer Shui On.

Mr Trump and Mr Lo are locked in a legal battle over the landmark sale of New York real estate worth US$1.76 billion, adding spice to the battle of the reality TV shows.

A personal friend of Mr Lo, Mr Pan declined to comment on the looming showdown, but cheekily added he was confident “his looks would be more acceptable to a Chinese audience”.

Lis, isn’t it funny how I suggested dropping the latter few paragraphs from the articles as it talked about Vincent Lo and the first comment asks about, er, Vincent Lo!

Yes, the issue of “face” in China. Now THAT is a big issue. I personally would have liked to see Mr. Pan say “You’re fired” because I think half the reason why shows like this are so popular in China is because they are so UN-Chinese.

For example, America’s Top Model, my family sit glued to the TV when that’s on and they love the bitching, the arguments and the temper tantrums. I thought my Chinese mom would have a fit when Tyra Banks totally lost it with that contestant (“You take responsibility girl…!”).

I can understand Mr. Pan’s point but it’s a reality TV show! It’s not real real.

Well, they’re still trying to figure out what the tag-line for Martha Stewart’s version of The Apprentice is going to be…so far the examples they’ve given have been pretty lame…stuff like, “you’ll be back in Idaho in time for apple-picking season.”

It just doesn’t resonate, you know?

Tag line for Martha Stewart’s show should be “You are going to jail!”. 🙂
