No More Mister Nice Blog

Gordon replaces the kid gloves with brass knuckles and holds a mirror up to his nemesis. Nothing can sink someone so fast as his own words.

The Discussion: 21 Comments

Fairplay to Gordon, I personally don’t blame him. He speaks a load of sense.

Bingfeng dug his own grave on this one, just go and read some of the links at the Horse’s Mouth.

By the way, if anyone hasn’t popped over to the Horse’s Mouth yet and read the post and links, it’s well worth it.

June 14, 2005 @ 10:06 am | Comment

Those links are pretty shocking. So ironic to hear people accusing others of “bashing” when they talk like that….

June 14, 2005 @ 10:09 am | Comment

Wow, that’s a whole lot of ugly. I notice Bingfeng didn’t do much in the way of moderating the discussion – I guess there’s two ways to see that, you could say “my blog comments are open to any point of view, no matter how unproductive or offensive” or “my blog comments are open only to people who play by my rules”, which is what Richard does (warnings and the occasional deleted comment because it offends the sensibility he wants the overall discussion to have).

Bingfeng’s post about THM said:

i have met people more nasty than this one, both in china and in other countries, but never collected those shitty comments showing their true colors. a nice exhibit for a museum of human stupidity, arrogance and intolerance.

OK, we now have exhibits for westerners and Chinese… let’s really archive all the stupid intolerant comments from around the globe. I call for submissions from every nation and language so that we can really get depressed! We can do it people!

Bol***ks, I’m going to say it.

Inferiority complex.

Sorry all, I had to get it out there, it was starting to fester. Reading that THM post and links really got me going just now.

By the way, I’m a stickler for politeness and I think that’s one of this website’s redeeming features.

sigh! this just confirms my decision a long time ago.

of the 24 hours a day of my life, how much should i devote to spam/troll/abuse comment on my blog?
answer: no comments = zero seconds.

i am old, i don’t have that much time left in my life …

June 14, 2005 @ 11:09 am | Comment

I see that Andres Gentry has switched his comments off.

June 14, 2005 @ 11:18 am | Comment

But eswn, it’s all part of the joys of blogging. The comments and the interaction are what make it a community. The newest anti-spam software has reduced the misery of spam comments to a mere nuisance, so the only real headache is trolls, of which there are plenty!!

June 14, 2005 @ 11:19 am | Comment

I like the semi-moderated, relatively open forums myself. But so much of it has to do with “community” culture and what’s considered acceptable and appropriate. Richard, did you catch the “Pie Wars” over at Kos? A bunch of dissatisfied Kossacks moved over to Booman Tribube as a consequence – the “community” at Booman has very different ideas on how to conduct discussions and deal with such controversies.

So the owner/moderator really sets the tone, I think.

June 14, 2005 @ 11:50 am | Comment

Lisa, I’ll have to check that out. I have a deep admiration for Kos and what he has achieved. Now, if only I could do the same here, I could devote myself to fulltime blogging.

I try to moderate as little as possible, and am amazed at how polite, in general, most of the commenters here are.

Does this site suffer from much trollage Richard? I noticed you pulled JR over his constant abuse a couple of weeks ago. It was a shame he turned into a troll actually as he used to make fair points once upon a time.

June 14, 2005 @ 11:59 am | Comment

Richard, that’s a part of the community vibe that I mentioned. Some of the commenting on Kos got incredibly nasty (I don’t know if you’ll be able to find those threads still, you know how fast things move over there), while on Booman, that just isn’t done.

I just did some searching; it seems it all started over a “pie ad” that offended women. As the men (and Kos) defended the ad, the women felt they were being condescending and subscribing to the attitude that women are not quite as equal as men. I missed the ad, so I don’t really understand why it’s so controversial. It also seems that abortion is a very big part of the Kos food fight.

Mike, it’s better now than it used to be. When I posted more about US politics I got a huge number of Republitrolls. Now, I have at least one who pops up now and then and posts incredibly obscene comments about me, unbelievably personal. What can you do? I must have rubbed him/her the wrong way.

A lot of my earlier posts continue to get trolls from google, especially an old Ann Coulter thread. I’ve had to do a lot of deleting, they were so profane.

June 14, 2005 @ 12:19 pm | Comment

well, it wasn’t so much the ad as the response, apparently, including the response from Kos himself, who called those who objected “bitter Feminist studies” somethingorothers, and then there was quite a lot of nasty name calling involving body parts and so on, and many calls for those who objected to “shut the f** up.” That kind of thing. It got very frat-ish. I missed most of it cause I’m not that involved in that whole community but the stuff I read was pretty nasty.

The point being that someone could object to an ad like that and NOT be told that they are stupid for doing so. Instead you could have a discussion about why the ad is there (Kos needs ad dollars) and that probably would have been the end of it.

I barely noticed the ad itself, I’m so used to stuff like that it’s just background noise, which is sad. It was basically (when you clicked on the link) a soft-core girl on girl pie fight with lots of fake bre@sts popping out all over the place. No different from lot of things. I think there’s a point to be made as to whether that’s appropriate on what is calling itself a progressive political site. But that whole point got lost in a lot of rude name-calling and mud-slinging. I gather a lot of the women who posted there had been feeling kind of marginalized for a long time, this just prompted the exodus.

Okay, this is WAAYYYY off topic now. Back to work go I.

What a story. I never go near the diaries, I admit. The whole thing sounds monumentally silly.

I just caught wind from elsewhere that BF is now deleting material from his blog.

Interesting.

June 14, 2005 @ 7:41 pm | Comment

Yep, he’s gone on a deletion binge.

I honestly believe bingfeng is a good guy. If only he could get the CCP talking points out of his system….

June 14, 2005 @ 8:00 pm | Comment

Richard, I have no doubt that you are right.

I had a really good friend from Beijing who was doing her MBA in Ohio and when she first arrived in the States she was fresh out of the PLA. She was so full of slogans and anti-American rehtoric that I could have swore she jumped right out of one of those propaganda posters from the CR and GLF.

Anyway, after 2 years in Ohio ,she was doing everything she could to stay in the States because she came to love life in the country she was taught to hate.

The CCP is very effective in the ‘education’ of their youth.

I can’t access the Horse’s Mouth at the moment? Blog wars getting serious? Hope not.

June 16, 2005 @ 9:21 am | Comment

Yes, I cannot access blog-city either. It’s a total block from where I am in China, I mean that my error message is the same one that pops up for the Free Tib and FaLG sites.

I hope this is only some temporary network error as I have olny just started to read some of the blogs on blog-city.
