Right-wing lunacy – it’s not a joke

We have yet another psycho-legislator with his own diseased mission:

A college production tells the story of Matthew Sheppard, a student beaten to death because he was gay.

And soon, it could be banned in Alabama.

Republican Alabama lawmaker Gerald Allen says homosexuality is an unacceptable lifestyle. As CBS News Correspondent Mark Strassmann reports, under his bill, public school libraries could no longer buy new copies of plays or books by gay authors, or about gay characters.

“I don’t look at it as censorship,” says State Representative Gerald Allen. “I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children.”

Books by any gay author would have to go: Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote and Gore Vidal. Alice Walker’s novel “The Color Purple” has lesbian characters.

It seems every week or so another hate-based bill like this rears its ugly head. And the legislators think they are being good Americans and, even more bizarre, good Christians. These things are now so common, they generate little outrage or anger; undisguised hatred and proposals for legalized discrimination have simply become something we accept as the norm. One day this ugly period will end, and people will look back at proposals like this, and at Focus on the Family and related hate groups, and wonder how we lost our moral compass, how we allowed America to become so closely associated with the “religious” right, the very antithesis of what Christianity is supposed to stand for.

Via Orcinus.

I wonder if people like Rep. Allen would ever wear WWJD paraphernalia; if they do, it would be a tragically ironic. I don’t know about your religious leanings, but at any rate you seem to have a much better grasp on Christ’s message than the Pharisees among us.

Well, since I’ve actually heard people on national TV lately arguing that Jesus was obvioiusly a Republican, I would assume Jesus is all for the banning of books.

Oh yeah, Jesus is against filibusters and for a flat tax, too.

God god, a troll on Pekingduck! Do not feed the troll! Poor little troll obviously has “issues” with his so-called masculinity.

For an example of real patriotism, go see/listen/read Al Gore’s speech over at moveonpac.

otherlisa, i know you, your picture with the chinee crowd tell a lot about you, especially the way you post it on your blog. you like to think you are different or/and you have this complex about a white fem meshing it with the locals
i don’t want to spar with you, i was just stating the obvious. male buttfucking is puke, it is not politics. it’s only so because some of you disguising as liberal interlocutors see it as an issue where you can’t lose. you won’t win wholesale, but you can always score points.
let me make myself clear, in case my grasp of your language is somehow not up to scratch. two male perverts can put whatever thay desire up each other’s myriad bodily orifices as they see fit. you crowd won this round- it’s not illegal if you have the decency to do it behind closed door. but to preach the acceptability of it, to suggest to young minds that it is totally NATURAL
for a man to pump another male’s(note here i use the masculine designators veery reluctantly) poopchute, maybe even okay to stick to the rest of the normal hetero slobs by forcing it on them through faggot union being legalised. otherlisa, most tolerant redmeat eating hetero sucker like myself have to draw the line HERE.

What about lesbians?

Well.

Fascinating thread. Drew the intelligentsia out of the woodwork, too!

Richard, I know you’re busy, but when you post something so stupendously ugly, you should also put in a link to the legislator’s contact information. Their staffs read the email.

“I don’t look at it as censorship,” says State … … Representative Gerald Allen. “I look at it as protecting the hearts and souls and minds of our children.” …

Translate it into Chinese and you could publish it in The People’s Daily.

P.S. Tanks to mother for the short introduction into insulting. As a second-language speaker I appreciate every opportunity to enhance my English skills and learn mor about the political culture of the conservative America.

shulan: ‘mother’ is apparently not a native English-speaker either, so you might be better off acquiring your swearing skills from someone else.

Also, I read somewhere that this bill failed. That’s good news, but the fact that a lawmaker in 2005 could even propose such an insane idea is scary enough.

I am leaving mother’s comments here for everyone to see what we’re up against. And Lisa, don’t take his insults to heart. It’s funny to see him calling us perverts, when we all know who the real pervert is.

Richard, don’t worry, I don’t take it to heart – I was just kind of shocked to see a troll here!

But do go check out Al Gore’s speech. It’s really something. Once again I mourn what should have been…

Dear mother,

Your point about men’s homosexual acts not being natural I can’t understand!. If natural sexual intercourse results in babies, then yes it is not natural. Humans and a limited number of other species gain pleasure form sexual intercourse which doesn’t result in reproduction. Therefore to have sexual intercourse for pleasure is not natural!?!? Is female rape natural?

It is well documented in scientific literature about birds who partake in homosexual acts (e.g. The New Zealand Pukeko). Also in nature there are cases of the female eating the male after copulation (e.g. The Common Praying Mantis); does that mean it is therefore acceptable in a day to day Middle American context. To argue that something is natural or not natural will not stand up to criticism, as many examples and broad sweeping statements can be made with little evidence.

Acceptability is a culturally learnt phenomenon.

Education of the fertile minds of youth should prepare them for the world they live in, and allow them to adapt with the changing world. Problem solving skills are always useful in life, along with the skill of synthesising diverse ideas. Creativity and passion always add to the richness of adulthood.

For our youth to attain a good grasp of these skills, exposure to a balanced view of the diversity of other people’s experiences of life, their thoughts related to their experiences, and the products of their thoughts are beneficial. If young minds are to “be exposed to perversion” by literature accessible to them, they must be able to critique it.

Hence one would argue that to present the view that “male buttfucking is puke” in schools as you assert in your posts, the opposite point of view that ‘male buttfucking is more fun than a bucket full of warty toads’ should also be included in school education. To exclude one should also result in the exclusion of the other, so to ban gay authors in schools should also result in the straight authors being banned!

P.S. Mother

Acceptability is a culturally learnt phenomenon.

I would never want to thought of as saying that one culture is any better than another.

And now for a musical interlude, courtesy of Rodgers & Hammerstein:

You’ve got to be taught to hate and fear
You’ve got to be taught from year to year
It’s got to be drummed in your dear little ear
You’ve got to be carefully taught

You’ve got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made
And people whose skin is a different shade
You’ve got to be carefully taught

You’ve got to be taught before it’s too late
Before you are six or seven or eight
To hate all the people your relatives hate
You’ve got to be carefully taught
You’ve got to be carefully taught!

>I would never want to thought of as saying that one culture is any better than another.

One question: was the culture of ancient Athens any better than the culture of Nazi Germany? Hate to tell you, some cultures are better than others. The statment that all cultures are equal doesn’t even pass the giggle test.

This actually says more about US schools than it does about the US political right (I’m taking liberties with the dates, but it sounds more dramatic like this).

If the US education system were better them people would know that in Japan during the 1920s, Germany during the 1930s Russia during the 1940s and then China during the 1950s one view and one voice were promoted to the exclusion of all else

One will, one way, one right. In the years that followed the state sanctioned polirization of these nations about 100 millions people were imprisioned or put to death by bullets, gas chambers, torture, and starvation.

When authorities can ban books with little public objection, then a society is in deep trouble.

It starts with homosexuals, who is next, people who are friends with homosexuals?
