Their playing traditional Chinese Chess.

My previous comment should have been “they are” not “their”. Sorry.

Yeah, now that spring is here, there’s an explosion of guys hanging out on sidewalks, playing chinese chess. It’s great listening to them banter through the game with each other and the spectators…but everyone needs to know that the real requirement, the *real* skill, is slamming your pieces down with maximum contempt after every move

“Men play checkers on the street” What a headline! And what a photo to bring that extra sense of urgency to the issue! Not enough in my mind has been devoted to raising people’s awareness to such scenes we often pass by ignorant of or,worse still, simply ignore. While the world chooses to direct its attention on this day to ephemeral items such as the EU backing down on arms sales to China, things that will be forgotten tomorrow, it is all the more imperative to focus on the here and now.

Hey, it’s a VACATION, you know? Not everything has to be news of global import.

Forgive me if I’m misreading the sarcasm above…

You know, I can’t write about heavy stuff all the time, especially when I’m on vacation (or recovering from my vacation). I’ve written about the EU arms embargo lots of times; maybe I just don’t have anything new to say about it. (Anyway, it seems to be a dead issue, with the EU throwing in the towel.)

I was joking, damn it! Joking!
But to be honest, I didn’t know it was a photo of a street scene in a particular place; I just thought Xishuangbanna was the name of a Chinese magazine where the photo came from. Either that, or an especially exotic fruit.
Besides, I wanted to see if I couldn’t somehow extent the number of comments about this one photo.

Keir, I actually thought you were joking at first. Then I read Lisa’s comment and thought, “Wait a minute. Did I misunderstand Keir’s comment? Is he being blasting me for showing these guys playing chess?” It’s really hard to tell. So thanks for clarifying!!

well, I did add the “forgive me if I misread the sarcasm” disclaimer…I guess I need a flashing emoticon or something…

so pleeese forgive me!

Sorry Lisa, but when you write “pleeese forgive me”, do you mean it, or are you being sarcastic?

March 24, 2005 @ 2:15 am | Comment

I am pleading for your understanding and forgiveness, of course!

In a vaguely sarcastic way…

Lisa, if it weren’t for you this whole mess would never have started! Look at all the pain you’ve generated.

(Keep it up; it keeps the site lively.)
