The other day the Financial Times ran an article by a professor at Columbia Unversity on the dangers of using history as a guide for the present.
His name is Mark Marzower.
A very interesting read.

Wars beging when leaders believe that the price of victory is worth mote than the value of a single human life.
They also begin when politicians are excempt from conscription.
Maybe if our leaders all had to send their eldest son to the front line as a grunt, we would have far fewer wars.
