Kind, loving people

I want everyone to read this post about how enlightened sages on the far-right heap scorn and mockery on Christopher Reeve and express joy in his plight and in his death, and for good reason — he was pro-Kerry. This is some of the most disgraceful stuff I’ve ever seen, and I read it in a mild state of shock.

I did go read digby’s post before discounting your point completely. It was very unkind and low-class. I didn’t read the deleted posts, of course, but honestly, how do you suppose they would compare with the commentary on DU upon Reagan’s death?

Glass houses, stones, and all that.

Unfortunately I can’t open blogspot sites, thus I miss Digby. I would like to read this referenced comment. Anyone have a solution. I hear tell that some government is blocking that site.

I can’t read the Digby comment, but I would like to propose a new name for Bush’s fake compassionate conservative image. something like “churlish conservative.”

It interests me to know if the Bush supporters would consider using bush hypothetically as a stock broker, or a lawyer, or accountant or a doctor if they knew he lied about his hypothetical responsibilities and prognoses like he lied about the reasons to get into his Iraq war and how he has been lying during the debates. Or would you lend bush $1,000.00 on his oral promise to repay it to you.

Perhaps those supporters of bush who would not, should put their mouths and votes where their money is, any place except in the hands of bush.

Sam, please direct me to the stuff about Reagan’s death. Seriously — were people writing that he should burn in hell and stuff like that? I never saw that. I thought Reagan had his good points and bad, and I always thought he was shallow, but I never, ever saw anyone say they wished him pain and torture.

Burning in hell were some of the more benevolent wishes for Reagan, but forget it, I’m not going to go digging up months-old posts, so you can just claim I’m delusional….no Democrat would ever do something like that.

Do you know how to google — it should take maybe 2 minutes. But you do this a lot (with all due respect) — bring up a charge and then fail to back it up. But don’t worry, I’ll take a minute to look myself. I highly doubt I’ll find anything even close to what those beasts said about Reeve, delighting in his misery and wishing him eternal damnation.

One difference is that Reagan supported terrorist groups, drug cartels and regimes of murderous thugs, while all Christopher Reeve has done is call for more stem cell research.

It will take you more than a minute, but you can narrow your search to Democratic Underground, with a short cruise by IndyMedia, if they keep their archives.

But why bother? Suddenly you’re going to retract the implication that only Republicans say vile things? You’re going to say “Democrat commenters have said even more disgraceful, vile things than the Republicans I’ve read” ? Gimme a break.

October 12, 2004 @ 9:11 pm | Comment

Oh, what the hell, I wasted a couple of minutes just to get actual quotes:

Portland Indymedia
Burn in hell Ronald Reagan! BURN IN HELL, you slimy child murderer! You killed
the innocent and awarded the guilty, may rot in filth! …

comment on hypocrites.com
“it’s about time, you ruinous mofo. i hope you take that hag nancy with you.”

LastFM, your personal music network
Reagan: … Burn in hell, you motherfucking cocksucker.

Democratic Underground
“i don’t care what killed him, alzhiemers or the black plague, i’m glad he’s dead ”
“I made a pact to piss on his grave! The time has come…”
“fuck you ronnie, here’s to ya pal. see ya in hell”

You will of course feature the nastiness of these brave souls in a post, NOT. But seriously, Richard, it seems silly to even have to prove this to you. Are you really, honestly, convinced that those disgusting comments about Reeves are only the kind of things that Republicans could say? You honestly don’t believe there’s much nastiness originating on the left, do you?

October 13, 2004 @ 12:02 am | Comment

Those are pretty nasty, and I appreciate you bringing them up and yes, I would have posted about them at the time had I seen them. I’ve criticized Kerry and the left whenever I think they fuck up.

What they say about Reagan is inexcusable. He was president, and maybe they hated his policies and his conservatism or whatever — no excuse, of course, for such nastiness. But why go after Christopher Reeve like this? What were his awful policies? What drove them to write such things?

Seeems to me, Richard, and I’ll admit I’m writing from a big distance, that of late American politics has degenerated into one collossal slanging match. I’m sorry that you have to sit through such an election. Of late I’ve found myself thinking that Americans have suddenly become incredibly childish, and it’s only sites like yours and my American friends that have allowed me to keep faith in the possibility of America climbing out of this pit.

Please, please, please do what you can to change things for the better. Please don’t give up hope, even if the fool-who-would-be-king manages to actually win a presidential election. Please keep fighting.

Thanks Chris, I will. Even if I move away, which I will consider strongly should shrub win again.
