“It has to be Edwards and no one else”

Susan Estrich, a Fox commentator and former manager of the Dukakis presidential campaign, just said there is no way Kerry can choose anyone but Edwards for his VP. Her arguments are good: So many of Kerry’s followers (like me) will be devastated if he chooses anyone else, and Kerry knows it. Gephardt just doesn’t cut it for these people, and Kerry knows it. Edwards will give the ticket an infusion of Southern charm and youthful energy, and Kerry knows it. It’s already a done deal, she said on tonight’s O’Reilly Factor.

This was music to my ears, but it has to be remembered that just a few days ago pundits were predicting it would be Gephardt. So I’ll hold back my enthusiasm until I hear it from John Kerry’s mouth. But I sure feel a lot more upbeat today than I did last week.

Is Gephard your pet name for him?

Cause it’s Gephardt.

Who knows? I’m just telling you what I heard tonight, and there’s been a recent flurry of articles saying it’s Edwards — but that’s certainly not proof positive. I think the Kerry people have picked up on just how bad (fatal) a choice Gephard would be. Or at least I certainly hope that’s the case.

My gut tells me that with Edwards as his veep choice he has a shot.

Otherwise I think he’s toast, and don’t let the poll numbers right now fool you, as many an incumbent has been down pretty bad at this point in the election cycle and pulled it out.

And the election results futures markets all currently favor Bush by about 20 points (in the trading spread).

My person wish for the election result? Well, if Kerry won with Edwards as veep and then promptly broke his neck “not falling” on some ice inauguration day.

Well, at least give Kerry a chance. I think there’s more to the man than most of us have seen, and that we’ll be seeing more of The Real John Kerry come the convention and the debates. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Keep an open mind!

I think “hk” was pointing out a spelling mistake. Gephardt‘s name has a t on the end, which gives it sort of a German flavor… yet another reason to hope “French-looking” John Kerry doesn’t choose him. I can see the GOP attack ads now: Chirac and Schröder morphing into Kerry and Gephardt.
