“Have you no sense of decency?”

Read Conrad’s post on a privately run AIDS orphanage plundered and closed by Henan Province officials after CCTV raised 1 million yuan to support the children. The kids were then packed off to some government-run institution, while the officials walked off with all the money. Sounds like a new low to me.

A major low, but not new. My colleagues in Guangdong province have been fighting this sort of thing for the last eight years. They have countless stories about how their (donated from the States) thousands of US dollars a month would get siphoned off to the government (or government officials, I should say) and left the babies in the same rotting hole they’d have for decades. Somehow, though, they’ve managed to keep at it and make a huge difference in those kids lives over the last eight years.

Too depressing for words. I only wonder how people like your colleagues keep going. Can you imagine the despair they must go through, to be betrayed by their own government, at the expense of sick children?

Not many things render me speechless but reading that post certainly did. As you say, too depressing for words.

I echo Richard’s comments re Guangdong.
