Will McCain be the “come-back kid”?

John McCain Back In Contention In Early States As Rivals Falter

Some time ago I reported how John McCain was starting to pick up support again nationally - now it looks like he is also winning votes in key states.

John McCain was left for dead earlier this summer, his presidential campaign having squandered its money and conservative support. But the former Vietnam prisoner of war is nothing if not a survivor. He stuck to the campaign trail and is now mounting a comeback.

Polls show McCain surging in New Hampshire. If he wins the Jan. 8 primary, even critics concede he’ll be a top contender again. “I am confident that we can carry — and will carry — New Hampshire,” McCain told reporters Wednesday. “We’ll get a tremendous bounce out of that. Then I believe we can win South Carolina.” The Arizona senator added later: “I don’t think you can buy the amount of media that you gain from winning those early primaries.”

As the article suggests, Lieberman’s endorsement could give him the crossover appeal that he would need from independents in the long-run. Positive reports on the Iraq surge has also helped his support for the operation - no one can accuse him of being on any bandwagon because he hasn’t moved an inch.

I’ll stand by my previous comments that McCain could be the Republicans best hope to keep the White House - even if Clinton isn’t running for the Democrats. The question is, will Republicans recognise that when they nominate their candidate?

Given how poorly Lieberman did with Independents in his last election in CT, I doubt how much his support is worth.

On the other hand, the flood of newspaper endorsements for McCain (like the Boston Globe) may have given him a boost against Romney in New Hampshire.

Yes, I noticed a number of papers supporting him - another reason his campaign is more confident.

Being the only candidate with real combat…and POW…and torture experience (and didn’t hand it out) he has some unique credentials. But overall he is the least worst of the field.

Many Republicans are starting to long for Alan Keyes as a the only real conservative left in the party.

Yeah, but nanhe, McWishyWashy may have unique credentials, but he’s shown his true stripes in the Senate while actually backing down on all of his tough talk on preventing torture by the current US administration.

Of course there is his role in the Keating Five Senate ethics scandal regarding the Commercial Property bubble/Savings and Loan collapse of the first Bush Administration, which gives him unique qualifications for handling the residential -commercial property bubble/investment bank collapse of the second Bush Administration.

Wow! What an Impressive man.

Ron Paul’s criticisms of American foreign policies are exactly what most of us outsiders bitch about. Things like Why is it necessary for America to have troops in Korea, wherever, everywhere? Yes, we’ve heard the so-called “logic” from the usual canting politicians, but Ron’s logic is what outsiders have been demanding for decades. He is absolutely right about having a Constitutional government and minding their own business. No more being the policeman of the world,no more building other people’s nations etc. He is spot on about:

1)N/S.Korea - They’d be united if not for US
2)Iran invading Israel, a nuclear club member? Ha, better chance of either of them landing on mars.
3)Vietnam - left them alone & look how well they’re doing now!
4)Israel - let them fight their own battles; stop funding them. US gov’t must start serving the American people not bankers & big business.
5)911 WTC - Because of having provoked, interfered & bombed Mid-East for 10 years . How would the US react if the same happens to America?
6) Small Government, mind our own business and zero income tax.

Left them alone? Obviously you don’t know your Chinese history. Either that or you want to forget getting your arses kicked by itty-bitty Vietnam under Deng.

Probably the same reason Xinhua refuses to discuss the political reforms going on in the Vietnam Communist Party as it might be a big scary thing to the small minds with big perqs in Zhongnanhai.

Thank goodness the peasants layed down their lives against the fascist KMT in the 40s in order to recreate a feudal hereditary aristocracy. Long Live the Princelings!

Very true….but under who, exactly? I’m guessing most South Koreans would ultimately rather be separate and chatting away on cell phones than united and living in Kimland.
