Oriental Virgin

Everytime I con myself into believing that China “gets it”…well, China finds away to remind me that I’m wrong. In this case a company rips off TWO corporate entities and still comes up with a laughable (but memorable) corporate logo. Further words fail. Courtesy of John at Sinosplice.

I have at least 50 great jokes and lines in my head, but I am too big a coward to put any of them down here. Seems to me this is a job for Sinocidal.

Everything I think myself Jeremiah really “gets it”… he embarrasses himself by associating the actions of a few individuals with that of “China”.

Shouldn’t it Be: Asian Virgin? Oriental seems sorta racist to me. I, for one, will boycott them. But then again..Maybe it’s like American Rappers calling themselves the dreaded N – word (Hint:it’s not nougat) If that’s the case it’s kinda cool.

CCT,

You need to develop a sense of humor about these things. (See the comments section at the original post)

Americans can watch the Daily Show or the French can watch Les Guignols and not get itchy in their nether regions. It’s called life. Some things are just funny. Relax a little. We post plenty of humorous items here that poke gentle (and sometimes not so gentle) fun at “Americans” as a general category as well.

Seriously, if you want to work yourself up into a lather, try spending a couple of days over at Sinocidal.

On a related note, if you’re in Beijing this weekend, we’re having a little soiree at our place, I think you’ll find more allies there than you’d expect and trust me, there’s nobody I know that could use a good party (lower case ‘p’) than you. That is, if you’re actually in Beijing…

Shit..Borat killed in America. I’d love to see Borat in China. That would be pretty funny.

March 15, 2007 @ 8:21 am | Comment

TBD:

Oh Dear God!

Borat in China? You’d start WWIII. It takes a certain level of confidence to be able to laugh at yourself…or laugh with others laughing at you.

“That Sacha Baron Cohen! I’m so mad! If he doesn’t like the USA…why! he should just go home! He’s stupid and doesn’t get America! Doesn’t he know we are still traumatized from when his country tried to keep us from our independence! Let’s throw rocks at the British Embassy and launch an internet campaign to boycott Bass Ale and Burberry!”

March 15, 2007 @ 8:38 am | Comment

When Borat came out I received literally thousands of Cell Phone text messages instructing me to “Take Out” any and all British people and British related targets that I came upon. It was a real Search and Destroy scenario. I, of course, did what I was told… Now, it’s all back to normal around here. Just less British stuff. Funny thing is..I really never had anything against British people or their Stuff. One time I wondered why I did it..Then I just forgot all about it ever happening. It’s better that way.

I don’t recommend a Borat sequel…….

I myself wore armbands and went around with my schoolmates smashing the “4 UKs” — anything with a crown, anyone who said “football” when they meant “soccer”, anybody who thought “pudding” comes in any other flavor than ‘chocolate, vanilla, and butterscotch’, and of course we held struggle sessions with all of the counter-revolutionaries who preferred warm beer that didn’t taste like water. And don’t get me started on those glorious days smashing tea shops and other remnants of our ‘feudal past’…

And of course, the splittists…those awful (probably foreign funded) agents who refuse to admit that Canada is a part of the United States…anyone who says so doesn’t know history and is messing with American internal sovereignty…

March 15, 2007 @ 9:04 am | Comment

Pudding comes in more flavors? Thats just WRONG! How could any other flavors be delicious? I can’t even imagine what other flavors there could be…..I’m getting riled up again……

The key to good humor is always self-deprecating humor, and it’s awfully difficult. The movie Borat isn’t poking fun at Americans but rather at this total goof-ball “from” Kazakhstan. If the movie was really poking fun at Americans in a similar way, it would likely bomb. Not surprisingly, many people in America with Orthodox background are quite offended by it, never mind the real country called Kazakhstan.

You think viewers tune in the Daily Show to laugh at themselves? No, they tune in to laugh at OTHER Americans of which the worldview they disagree with.

JXie, I’m still scratching my head at your last post…Huh? Ting Bu Dong

March 15, 2007 @ 9:36 am | Comment

Which part you want me to explain? The movie Borat? Self-deprecating humor (when in doubt, don’t laugh at others’ expense)? Or the viewership of the Daily Show?

March 15, 2007 @ 9:43 am | Comment

JXie,

You just don’t “get America.” How could you? With our 231.5 years of continuous civilization, it is far too complex for an outsider to fathom…

Seriously though, I’m not sure you get how humor works. By your definition, humor in America should begin and end with Rodney Dangerfield. Case in point: Richard Pryor was never funnier than when he was riffing on white people. Were people pissed? Absolutely. But it’s classic comedy now. Lenny Bruce made a career out of offending people. For my part, one of my favorite “humorists” is P.J. O’Rourke, whose politics are far to the right of my own. I find his characterizations of the “academic liberal elite” a scream, in part because he’s so spot on and he’s funny doing it.

I’ve got an idea for how to fix the original problem:

1) Chinese companies shouldn’t rip off other people’s logos. Especially if they don’t understand the linguistic context for the original logos.

2) Why have the logo in English after all? Chinese is the language of the future, right? Nobody needs foreigners in China, right? So, why cater to our linguistic imbecility, why not just put all logos and signs in a proper language with a long history: Classical Chinese? China is the country of the future, it’s time for we laowai to sink or swim and we need China’s help to do it. No more signs in Chinglish…let’s go back to Wen Yan. In Fantizi.

I bet J likes physical humor a bunch.

March 15, 2007 @ 9:50 am | Comment

Maybe, Jeremiah. I don’t get many many things. Honestly sometimes I feel like I don’t get China either.

But why getting America is a prerequisite of getting good humor?

Personally I just don’t poke fun at others without first poking fun at myself first — I mean really poking fun at myself not just some other dumb Chinese (or dumb members of my associations). Asking others with a different cultural background to develop a sense of humor is another big no-no to me. I am probably a bit uptight. But hey, the more you travel, the more you realize how big this world is, and how diverse people are, and how no right or wrong in many things…

Will Richard Pryor’s stuff work for you if he only poke fun at white people but not at “n*ggers”?

March 15, 2007 @ 10:03 am | Comment

It’s something totally irrelevant…

How do you eat fish with bone? If a part of the process involves deboning the fish with chopsticks, or knife/fork, or hands, what if you find out there is a piece of bone in your mouth?

What’s your mannerism?

Oriental is actually a pretty neutral term. Antiquated and inaccurate, maybe, but only in America has it become freighted with racist connotations and become an ethnic slur. It’s fine, really.

Ha! Never! *strikes up a rousing rendition of “The Maple Leaf Forever”

In America we have the technology to produce Fish and all other animal life (Chickens, Pigs. Cows etc..) completely boneless. Thus avoiding the ugly business of deboning. You see our food is born and raised deboned. JXie, if you get a chance..check out the video on youtube showing the boneless, newborn calf trying to take his first steps. That’s physical humor!
