Sam, of course you like it: It’s aggressive, rude, nasty, reactionary, vengeful, inciteful, immature, self-righteous, demagogic, illegal (or at least in strong breach of congressional protocol) and ruthless. In other words, it’s Republican.

Well, Richard, I liked Kerry’s use of strong language, too. I guess in his case it’s refreshing and, uh, Democrat?

What on earth are you talking about? I have never heard of Kerry using strong language along the lines of “Fuck yourself” in public, ever. Have you? Documentation, please. (And not something overheard by someone, as in “It’s a fucking hot day.” Saying “Fuck yourself” to someone’s face in front of everyone on the senate floor is not like a passing reference unintentionally overheard by a bystander.) If Kerry ever did something comparable, I’ll be disappointed and call him on it. I’ve been critical of him before.

“What on earth are you talking about? ”

Hm. I could have sworn I read about it on this very blog. There was a minor brouhaha about Kerry’s language in a Rolling Stone interview several months ago. Another blogger commented”
“I still count your political resuscitation from the moment you dropped the f-bomb in that Rolling Stone interview in early December. It made you sound like you weren’t a typical politician; it made you sound like you weren’t a Yale-educated Brahmin. It made you sound tough, and voters like that.”

I thought it was as insignificant as Cheney’s recent duff. Reports of Kerry blaming “that sonofabitch” (his secret service guard) when he fell on skis were more disturbing to me. I’ve since heard that was a false report, but can’t verify either way.

“Documentation, please.”
Surely you can Google as well as I. Since it’s unlikely to change your opinion, I wouldn’t waste the time, unless you have an awful lot to waste.

But I suspect the other blogger’s right. Voters do seem to like a tough guy in the white house, be he D or R. Carter and Bush I may have been the last of the softies.

I never saw it before. What did Kerry say, and whom did he insult? Sorry, if you want to make the claim you can provide the link. I’m sure you’re right, but the way blogging works, at least for me and as far as I’ve ever seen, is you present the quote and the link. You don’t just say you heard something and tell the readers to go do their own research. That’s an open invitation to rumor mongering.

“You don’t just say you heard something and tell the readers to go do their own research.”

It’s pretty widely known, Richard. My point, though poorly made, is two-fold. First, cursing is extremely common among politicians, and I doubt that you’re naĂŻve enough to think it’s not. Sure, the press can get some mileage out of it if they catch someone they don’t like in a gaffe, but these guys are big people who run in pretty aggressive circles; ALL OF THEM. And it’s truly no big deal. It’s just spin-fodder, which you can see from the headings listed in the popdex listings below. First (a), to deny that you, too, can be subject to selective perception due to partisanship leaves you open to all sorts of foolishness. I’m sure you were reading when the incident happened, but it must not have registered at all.

Second, enthusiasts on either side are likely to regret their hyper-microscopic focus on every detail of their candidates life, because it will boomerang, only making the WHOLE political discourse more ugly, without adding a jot of political wisdom. Will Kerry be able to withstand the same kind of examination that Clinton went through, and that Bush is undergoing now? Why would you think so? Example: I bet you’re a basically upstanding guy. Let the nitpickers loose on every detail of your life and they can make you look like Satan himself.

After Kerry said “fuck” in a Rolling Stone Interview, the references were hilariously transparent. Look at the headings referring to the same incident:
Refreshingly youthful and frank JK
“spunky John Kerry”
aggressive, rude, nasty, reactionary, vengeful, inciteful, immature, self-righteous, demagogic, and ruthless JK: (in other words Republican?)
“Cursing Kerry unleashes foul-mouthed attack on Bush”
The citations are listed exhaustively here:

I’m afraid the Rolling Stone archives are for pay only. The incident which disturbs me more is his verbal treatment of the Secret Service agents guarding him, but again, I do NOT think either case has a damn thing to do with whether he’d be my preferred candidate. The most comprehensive treatment of that incident is here.

See my point?

Let me repeat verbatim my earlier reponse to you, which still holds:

“What on earth are you talking about? I have never heard of Kerry using strong language along the lines of “Fuck yourself” in public, ever. Have you? ”

It struck me as a revelation: You really don’t see the difference between saying “Go fuck yourself,” directly to someone’s face (especially in public! on the Senate floor!) and saying to someone, “Bush is a fucking lousy president.” This is intereasting, as it’s at the heart of our earlier discussion about addressing people using obscenities. I see a huge diffference between the two examples in terms of civility. Had Cheney used the latter-type example, there would be little to no controversy. When you attack a person with those words of the first example, it’s bullying and it’s scary.

It’s okay, there’s no right or wrong here, just a matter of how you and I see the world and how you and I believe we should talk to the people in it.
