Last night I watched in slack-jawed wonder as Fox News “political analyst” Ann Coulter debated the Iraq war with Bill O’Reilly. She insists it’s going “magnificently” and that we’ve found lots of weapons of mass destruction. It was bizarre, and I intended to write about it at length when I saw that a superb blogger had done it for me. If you hate Ann Coulter, and if O’Reilly gives you the creeps, it is truly must reading. I’m blogrolling World O’Crap right now.

Hate is such a strong word.

Well, I hate to get up in the morning, I hate being cold and I hate watching American Idol. I also hate Ann Coulter. I honestly don’t think it’s that strong a word — if it were, we wouldn’t use it all the time, as most people do.

Most people aren’t worth hating — they have to do something pretty bad to merit being hated. Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter meet my stringent criteria for deserving to be hated. They lie, knowing exactly what they are doing. And I’m not alone; do a search of “hate Ann Coulter” and see how many bloggers use that word for her.

I’m in the states right now, and actually saw this exchange.

First off, to whoever is painting on Ann’s eyebrows, you need to use a bigger brush, you’re scaring me. Come out to Beijing and I’ll take you to LiuLiChang, we’ll get nice brushes, we’ll get some coffee, we’ll talk. No big whoop.

Second, I was surprised to see O’Reilly take a (relatively) moderate Republican position. I don’t care if it was to score points off his rival, that’s standard.

I am surprised that O’Reilly strongly tied his opinions to high ranking servicepeople in Iraq (Surprisingly good job, Bill). Coulter rejected it all out of hand (though I wanted to see her claim that pre-Gulf War 1 shell as WMD evidence, but she didn’t bite).

Are conservatives stratifying over these two? Enough conservatives already see O’Reilly as an informed voice of reason…this segment reinforces that and marginalizes Coulter. Is the right wing veins-popping-out-of-the-forehead set really competing on facts now?

Also, 2-3 nights ago, did you see Sean Hannity get chewed up and spit out by the ex-US ambassador to the UN? It was hot.

Dan, I missed it, but I would have killed to see it. Hannity is usually unflappable.

Doug, O’Reilly is shrewd. He constantly throws out little nuggets of praise and respect for certain mainstream and even liberal concepts and people. But if you watch him continuously, you’ll see it’s a trick. He is a reactionary, but he’s always out to show how “fair and balanced” he is, to fool us into thinking he’s kind of lovable and even open-minded. I strongly recommend you don’t fall for it — this is exactly what he wants to do, position himself as more moderate than he is. And that’s insidious. At least with hannity, you always know what a lying, jingoistic fascist he is. He never tries to get you to think otherwise. O’Reilly is more of a snake.

I don’t know who you’re calling doug, but that wasn’t me who posted anything.

By the way:

I’m absolutely convinced that people like O’reilly and coulter have been so caught up in the theatre of being right-wing reactionaries that they don’t even think about what they’re saying any more.

Someone should write a play about them. Call it “Lost in the Pentagon.”

Sorry Doug, I read Dan as Doug. I’m watching too much Fox News.

You’re right about Ann and Bill. They are actually like shock jocks, and they can go to just about any extent, and their fans get cheap thrills from it. Her hero, and this is from her own book Treason, is Senator Joe McCarthy, so we know we’re dealing with someone very strange, an odd freak of nature.

What are you guys smoking? Coulter, O’Reilly, Hannity and Rush all ROCK! Just like the “Gipper” Ronald Reagan rocked!

It is the Left that refuses to debate the issues. Whenever anyone dares to challenge the Left’s world view with facts, the Left’s response is to scream, lie and resort to name-calling. They consider anyone challenging their views as some sort of apostate, which in the Muslim religion, carries the penalty of death.

I thought the Left was against the death penalty.
