Beware the Hong Kong Morality Police

Blogs can be fun and interesting. Then they can get surly and weird. Luckily, in our little community there’s not too much of the latter. And then earlier today a reader pointed me to this post. As my fellow expat blogger Conrad commented a few days ago, “Good lord.”

The Discussion: 17 Comments

Not to (re-)open a can of worms here, but… is it really inaccurate to refer to Conrad as a racist? He’s on record as strongly disliking Western (and especially American) women. But somehow I don’t think that’s the sort of “racism” Glutter has in mind.

Not the same thing vaara. I have a thing for redheads. That doesn’t make me a Hairist.

Thud and Blunder

Look, ma! Infighting! Now if that isn’t ridiculous, I don’t know what is. Seriously, this entry and its sequel were provoked by. . . pictures of girls in bikinis? Huh? I actually didn’t want to pick sides in a fight…

It is human nature for man wanting to watch woman, especially young, pretty woman. I confess that I find it entertaining. Is it due to male chauninism? I am not sure. But I am pretty skeptical of people pretending to be moralist.

However, Glutter does make a good point and makes me think.

“He knows that, he knows he can put pictures up of teenagers and not have all his political credibility taken away. I have never seen a site like that based in the US because if you’re talking politics and then posting pictures from soft porn sites, people are going to balk.”

Steve, on blogs you can do that; I’ve seen it before. If it was a purely political blog like Josh Marshall or Andrew Sullivan it would be totally weird to see girly pictures. But look carefully at Gweilo Diaries — it is entertainment above all else. It is a mix of Conrad’s sexploits, politics, dreamgirls, pictures of his vacation spots, humor, etc. It is not a political blog, though politics is a good part of it. Let him do with it as he chooses.

Vaara, I would say Conrad is absolutely not a racist. If he ever said he strongly dislikes Western women (and that’s a big IF — did he really say that?) I don’t think it’s comparable to, say, the way a Klanner dislikes “niggers” or Jews.

I thought this was interesting:
“They pick on me, which is so obvious to me and everyone around me is because I am an Asian Woman. Because I look like those girls they put the photos up of. “

She doesn’t look anything like the pictures on Conrad’s site, so she should stop flattering herself.

“But instead of smiling coyly back, I am sitting behind my computer saying I don’t like watching my Asian sisters paraded around on the internet in a community they decided I was part of, with no intention of my own.”

Suppose she had been writing about a website based on Las Vegas life, where many rich Asians get it on with white women in what some people would consider an exploitative situation: replace “Asian” with “White” in the above passage and listen to what a nutcase she sounds like.

Well, of course he’s not a racist; I was merely trying to point out the absurdity of Yan’s claim to the contrary.

Sorry vaara, I wasn’t sure for a second….

As official spokesman for the Sleazy EXpats Southeast Asia Division (SEX- SAD), I would just like to say that your incisive political comments are in no way undermined by the accompanying pictures of pretty Asian females girls. Don’t let the silent majority be, err silenced by this, err, Asian female.

Let them keep their Asian soft porn pics. It’s a safety valve that keeps them away from the under age girls – doesn’t it?

January 26, 2004 @ 8:30 pm | Comment

So, Mike, oh wise one, are you specifically saying that Conrad (or others) would be attacking under age girls if they did not post pictures of girls (which do not meet the criteria to be considered soft porn by the way).

Conrad – I would send a legal letter to Richard and demand the email address. That is quite a public accusation.

I think it’s sarcastic. Maybe I’m wrong.

Vaara, for the record, I have never said that I dislike Western women, nor is that true. I have at times objected to the strident behavior adopted by certain (indeed, many) Western expat women in Asia, which is not the same thing. I understand what you were saying, but I just wanted to expressly make that distinction.

Actually, Playboy Magazine’s been doing it since the 60s.

To Gary Glitter and Mike Ward,

Funny, how your messages sound eerily similar — obscene, immature, nasty, etc. Odder still is that neither of you chose to leave email addresses (sorry Phil, I would gladly have given them to conrad on request). But you know what? The very oddest thing is that you both have the exact same IP address! Talk about immaturity. You’re a prime candidate for the CDC (Comment Deletion Club) and, if you post here again, I’m going to ban your IP address too.

Thanks Conrad, it’s just that I remembered seeing something on your blog a while back about Western women, but when I went to look for it, I couldn’t find it.

Black Santana Man steps in to HK blog war!

I do like it when others sense that a blog war is calming down and dig through old embers to keep it going. Still no signs of embedded CNN journalists sadly, but ukjoe offers her assessment of it all, and
